Water Aerobics

Water Aerobics Club: “Maria Spitzer "

Maria Spitzer
Water aerobics (aqua aerobics) is a type of aerobics performed in a pool with a depth of 1.20 to 1.80 m.
It consisits of a complex of exercises suitable for all ages and in accordance with individual fitness level. Water aerobics combines fitness, Pilates, martial arts, jogging, swimming, Callanetics.
The training session has a duration of 60 minutes and includes: warming up, actual aerobic part with alternating periods of raising and lowering of heart rate (Interval cardio), Stretching – stretching muscles to relax.
Special equipment is used and all muscle groups are loaded, while the likelihood of getting an injury is reduced to zero.
Advantages of water aerobics:
Does not put a load on joints – 80% of the individual’s weight is born by the water
Strengthens the heart and increases oxygen flow to muscles.
Water resistance stimulates the muscles and they do more work.
A good way to lose extra weight, to harden the muscles and to shape the body.
Suitable for people with injuries, back pain, disc disease, disc herniations, varicose veins, weak muscles, deconditioning.
Water aerobics is recommended for pregnant women, who can attend the sessions from the beginning to the end of the pregnancy. It is a wonderful way to maintain shape and to make a faster recover after birth. Exercises for pregnant women do not load the lumbo-sacral and abdominal regions. An emphasis is put on of the problem areas in future mothers – back, legs – internal, external and posterior part of the thighs; gluteal region, arms – biceps, triceps; shoulders.
Water aerobics has a good effect on deconditioning and cramps; the optimal position for the baby in the water is prone.
Varieties of water aerobics:
Water Callanetics: complex of firming exercises to shape the problem areas – waist, hips, thighs, abdomen. Can be practiced alone.
Water gymnastics – lighter exercise, tailored to the fitness level, to strengthen the body.

Maria Spitzer: Keep Your Body and Mind in Shape

Dzhadala Maria| 2009-06-08
Maria Spitzer is a young lady who has her own water aerobics club. She has found the balance between work and family. She is happy with her two daughters. Here's what she shared with the readers of Az-jenata.com:

What profession did you dream of as a child?
My dream as a kid was to become World Champion! This didn’t happen, but what I do now makes me really happy.

How did you decide to work with water sports and create your own club?
After I got pregnant with my first daughter (I have two daughters – 7 and 3 year old), I wanted to find a way to maintain shape during the pregnancy. 9 months I didn’t come out of the pool and eventually, besides Maggie, the idea for water aerobics was born.

In which month of pregnancy should we start water gymnastics?
Water gymnastics in healthy women may be practiced from the beginning of pregnancy until the ninth month. All expectant mothers in the club feel great in the pool, light as a feather, with the water shaping their bodies, and most importantly, know that this is a great feeling for the babies in them.

You coach water aerobics and water Callanetics – would you recommend them for strengthening the body, weight loss or simply for maintaining a good shape? How many sessions per week would you recommend?
I recommend sports, at least 1-2 times a week, no matter what kind of water aerobics. This is the best way to remove excess weight, to strengthen and tighten the whole body with the water taking away the accumulated negative energy.

Is it heroic to be a woman today?
I define heroism as something exceptional, achieved by few. But modern woman, the one who works, shops, cooks, looks after her children; who, after a hard day at work, finds time for sports and is a loving wife at night (with her nails done!), she deserves attention and respect.

What do you dream of?
There is no complete happiness, people say. I achieved my dream, to find balance in life. I think this is the most important piece of the puzzle of happiness.

What is your message to Bulgarian women?
Women, keep your body and mind in shape, this is the only way to be comfortable in life. And most importantly, be positive.

Favourite colour? Song? Taste? Place?
My favourite colour is, of course, the colour of roses and passion – Red. Whitney Houston is the greatest. Vegetarian cuisine is preferred by me and my family and is, as a whole, healthy food. I follow the maxim – it is not important where you are but with whom. If I am with my loved children and man, I do not care where I am.
