The ophthalmology department in St. Sofia Hospital has been functioning since 2006. In May 2009 it was accredited with excellent ranking for student and post-graduate training. Our physicians have very high professional and teaching skills; they have been trained in Germany, Austria, France, United Kingdom, India, Russia.

The technical equipment is regularly up-to-dated with the latest models from different world-famous companies – BAUSCH & LOMB, CANON, OPTOVUE, ELLEX, MOELLER-WEDEL, QUANTEL. In 2006 the first two-dimensional OCT (optical coherence tomograph) in Bulgaria started functioning at the department. Doctors introduced OCT as a routine method for diagnosis, follow-up and study of the diseases of the retina. Today the department operates the latest three-dimensional OCT for retinal imaging. This allows to choose and apply the right treatment with optimal costs for the patient. Fundus camera for plain and contrast studies, lasers to treat glaucoma, secondary cataract, diabetic retinopathy, vascular diseases of the eye, degenerations and retinal tears are used routinely. A comprehensive set for early diagnosis of glaucoma is in place, including: tonometry, pachymetry, fundus photography, computer perimetry, OCT. As a result, the number of repeat exams is limited to a minimum, a maximum benefit for the patient is achieved in terms of diagnosis and treatment, as well as in terms of medication costs.
All devices in the diagnostic module have the ability for digital processing of the results of the performed tests. This means that the patient receives them immediately without the need of a repeat visit.
The most advanced surgical techniques are applied in the department, in accordance with world standards for treatment of cataract and glaucoma, taking into account the real needs of the patient, consistent with his or her financial resources. Glaucoma surgery is performed with insertion of titanium implants. Physicians are highly specialized in the surgical treatment of diabetic retinopathy and its complications, retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhages, macular degeneration.
The outpatient unit and the ophthalmology department are accredited and have contracts with the NHIF for specialized and highly specialized help, for surgical and conservative treatment of eye diseases in all clinical pathways.
