Department of General Surgery

 A broad spectrum of surgical interventions is performed at the Department of Surgery in St. Sofia Hospital. 

 
The efforts of the department are primarily focused on modern and patient friendly surgical techniques, allowing faster recovery and return of the patient to a normal life. Team physicians are prepared for this type of surgery following training in Bulgaria and abroad.
 
The Department of General Surgery Performs: 
Laparoscopic (with minimal blood loss) operations of the gallbladder and biliary system. 
Conventional and laparoscopic (with minimal blood loss) operations for inguinal, umbilical, postoperative and other hernias (with or without mesh). 
Operations for hemorrhoids, perianal fistulas, anal fissures, dermoid cysts and other diseases of the anus and perianal area with surgical staplers, ultrasonic scalpels or argon-coagulators. 
Operations for cancer or benign tumours of the stomach, small bowel, colon and rectum. 
Conservative and operative treatment of acute abdominal conditions. 
Operations for benign and malignant tumors of the breast. 
Plastic surgery. 
 
Outpatient Section 
The hospital has a surgical outpatient office and procedure room, located on the ground floor of the outpatient unit (room № 2). 
 
Primary and secondary examinations are performed on patients with NHIF-funded referrals, as well as paid consultations.

The sector for Vascular Surgery and Angiology is the newest unit in St. Sofia Hospital. It is located on the 4th floor of the hospital and has a capacity of 10 beds, which can be increased if necessary. Hospital rooms and workstations meet all modern European hygienic and accreditation requirements – private bathroom, television, opportunity for use of telephone, internet, individual temperature regulation in every room, etc.

Patient care is in the hands of a highly specialized medical and nursing team. The treatment process is performed by two experts – Dr. Rosen Stoychev, a surgeon with thirty years of experience in the fields of vascular surgery and angiology – head of department, and Dr. Valentin Gindyanov, a physician with twenty-five years of experience in general and vascular surgery.
The department allows for accurate diagnosis and modern treatment of the whole range of diseases of the arterial, venous and lymphatic systems.

All surgical methods for treatment of acute and chronic arterial insufficiency of the peripheral and major arteries are applied in the department:
• Trauma of the arterial and venous vessels.
• Acute occlusive events – thrombosis and embolism.
• Aortic arch syndrome, Takayasu disease, carotid artery disease.
• Thrombosis of the abdominal aorta (Leriche syndrome), stenoses and chronic occlusions of the iliac, femoral and popliteal arteries, Buerger's disease.
• Chronic diseases of the visceral vessels – kdney (renovascular hypertension) and mesenteric arteries.
• Congenital diseases of the arterial, venous and lymphatic systems.
• Functional vascular conditions.
• Creating of permanent vascular access for hemodialysis (arterio-venous fistula and implantation of vascular prostheses).
• Participation in kidney transplantations.
• Operative and conservative treatment of all acute and chronic diseases of the venous and lymphatic systems.
• 24 hour emergency consultative and operative support to all departments in the hospital.
• Conducting clinical trials.

The department has an outpatient office for consulting and admitting patients, including NHIF-funded referrals. Home visits for examinations, consultations and procedures are offered to patients with limited mobility.
